AMERICAN TABLOID 2021

By Daniel Hopsicker

After 9/11, the only conspiracy theory that didn’t receive big play in the media was the one that was true.

“During the year 2000—the year before the attack—a flood of Arabs came to Sarasota County, Florida to learn to fly.”

Nobody mentioned it.

In his 4-part HBO documentary, Spike Lee just got caught getting cozy with 9/11 Truthers. Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth. Thermite in the Towers. No planes hit the Pentagon. The Arabs were patsies. WTC-7.

But the 9/11 conspiracy wasn’t in New York. It was in Florida.

When the Twin Tower fell, Venice, Florida became the biggest September 11th crime scene that wasn’t reduced to rubble. Yet when I got to Venice three months after the attack, I didn’t have to step around Bob Woodward to get to the bar.

How did I become a tabloid favorite?

After 9/11, the only newspaper to pick up the story—at least the sensational bits about about Mohamed Atta, his stripper girlfriend, and their 3-day cocaine binge in Key West—was Germany’s tabloid newspaper Der Bild, the biggest daily circulation newspaper on the planet.

Then last week The National Enquirer’s sister publication The Globe did a two-page spread, headlined “Saudi Royal Family Financed 9/11 Terror,” which quoted me extensively.

After identifying me as the author of “Welcome to TerrorLand,” the story quotes me saying “The government never released most of it’s (9/11) files because the CIA never wants to accept blame for having done anything wrong.”

In the aftermath of the attack, famous journalist Hedrick Smith reported, “19 hijackers moved through Europe and America unnoticed.”

I wrote: “In a pig’s eye, they did.”

So where does that leave us? You tell me.

American Tabloid

James Ellroy’s novel “American Tabloid,” which the BBC called “One of the 100 Most Influential Novels,” covers five years—’58 to ’63—in five sections.

The title of Part IV is “HEROIN.”

In the yet-to-be-written “American Tabloid” about the September 11th attack, there will be an even bigger section titled “HEROIN.

Someone should tell Spike Lee
