CO-CREATION: ‘Follow Your Bliss’, Getting Rid of the Life We’ve Planned, To Have the Life Waiting For Us

“…My general formula for my students is “Follow your bliss.” Find where it is, and don’t be afraid to follow it… doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors, and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else. Life is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it…the meaning of life is whatever you ascribe it to be…the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it is all about.”

‘Follow Your Bliss’, Getting Rid of the Life We’ve Planned, To Have the Life Waiting For Us

Joseph Campbell – “Getting rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us”

The schizophrenic is drowning in the same waters in which the mystic swims with delight.”~ Joseph Campbell

it is extremely difficult for us to imagine how a hellish experience can turn into a paradise… It defies all our rational and logical thinking.

However if we consider the skillful surfer, we will notice their excited anticipation of a very huge and threatening wave…while those who are not familiar with the skill of surfing perceive the oncoming waves as a hellish experience, the surfer finds great delight by intuitively flowing with the wave and overcoming its challenge… They go through a flow experience commonly known as “being in the zone”… It is a time of complete concentration on an activity in which they lose the experience of self and sense of time… .. there are many such activities particularly in the field of athletics offering a similar experience of “being in the zone ”

More importantly, it is the universal approach in the spiritual experience… Like the surfer when faced with an extremely threatening situation we may find we cannot escape but instead must move to its center in complete surrender… The loss of self through an act of surrender turns out to be nothing more than giving up control and resistance… There is ecstasy in being liberated from the heavy weight of self-consciousness… and just as the surfer is dependent on their intuitive powers to guide them through a turbulent wave, the liberated person finds the same intuition will lead them through a turbulent life experience.

The surfer must go through a long period of practice before they can become masters of surfing … And this is also true of the liberated person who must go through extensive spiritual practice before they can fully transcend their personal self …. Just as a surfer needs very challenging waves to fully experience their mastery, the liberated person also needs very challenging life experiences to be fully aware of their freedom.

“The rational mind, home of the ego, learns and accepts the beliefs and expectations of the social environment… it becomes our basic identity and its failure can result in painful symptoms including anxiety, guilt, and depression.

It is common to feel something is wrong in our perception of life and we want to seek answers to this problem… Most spiritual teachings point toward liberation from the ego but not clear how this happens or what replaces the ego and its rational mind… It is commonly understood that we cannot intellectually find a solution but it must be an emotionally experienced… One accepted belief is the need for the ego to experience a total feeling of exhaustion and failure… Joseph Campbell writes, “the black moment is the moment when the real message of transformation is going to come. At the darkest moment comes the light ”

But the experience is not complete until we discover the” sacred gift of the intuitive mind”and its extraordinary powers of imagination…Albert Einstein said, “The only real valuable thing is intuition” . .. intuition is expressed through feelings and images rather than rational thoughts and concepts… the rational mind relates to the social environment while the intuitive mind relates to universal intelligence.

Intuition was our primary awareness in early childhood and buried now in our ” inner child ” … If we listen very quietly we may hear our inner child trying to express itself .

Our intuitive mind has its own inner compass separate from the rational mind and uniquely moves us in a direction true to our own nature . ..It also wants to grow through creative challenges and explorations of nature . ..The intuitive mind can develop a wisdom beyond any potential of the rational mind .

The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe” ~Joseph Campbell
