Our culture doesn’t place much value on sleep. How often have you thought that sleeping is a waste of time or heard someone utter “I’ll sleep when I’m dead”? If you don’t sleep well, you could be dead a lot sooner than you might like.
Not getting enough sleep has been found to increase increase rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even overall death rates. It’s that important.
In 1960, 2% of the population slept less than six hours, now 35% sleep less than that.
A poll by the National Sleep Foundation found that 43% of Americans between the ages of 13 and 64 say they rarely or never get a good night’s sleep. 60% say that they experience a sleep problem every night or almost every night. About two-thirds say their sleep needs are not being met during the course of the week. (1)
Why can’t we get to sleep? A big part of the problem is artificial light.
It wasn’t that long ago that people got up with and went to bed with the sun.
But now we get too little natural daylight during the day, while we’re exposed to artificial light all evening long.
Circadian Rhythm Disruption (CRD)
This unnatural pattern of light exposure disrupts your circadian rhythm leading to a fancy-sounding malady — chronodisruption or Circadian Rhythm Disruption (CRD).
The negative effects of CRD have been widely studied by one industry — the airlines. The Federal Aviation Administration, as you can imagine, is very concerned with how lack of sleep and jet lag (a form of CRD) affect pilots. (2)
The FAA warns pilots to watch out for the following symptoms of CRD:
- Insomnia
- Difficulty concentrating, staying alert, or accomplishing mental tasks
- Increased negative moods and mood swings
- Irritability
- Apathy or reduced interest
- Impaired sensory perceptions
- Impaired decision making
- Slowed reaction time
- Tendency to avoid personal interactions
- Increased frequency and severity of piloting errors
You can see how deadly serious this issue can be. No one wants to fly in a plane with an exhausted, apathetic pilot prone to making errors!
We’re all subject to the same set of symptoms when our sleep cycle is disrupted.
I don’t want to get up with the chickens and go to bed with the sun any more than you do. Here are some simple ways to overcome sleep problems caused by artificial lighting.
Good Morning, Sunshine
It seems unrelated, but your exposure to light in the morning affects how well you’ll sleep that night.
Being outside in the morning for 15-30 minutes increases your body’s melatonin production (a natural hormone that regulates your sleep cycle) at night.
If getting morning sunshine is difficult, you can use a light box to help reset your circadian rhythm. This is especially helpful if you also have Seasonal Affective Disorder. Light boxes have been found to work better for this condition than prescribed drugs!
If you don’t have time to get light exposure in the morning, there’s a really innovative idea that’s popular in Europe but has just made its way here — Valkee Bright Light Ear Headset. Unlike SAD lamps, this ear headset is easily transportable and studies have shown you can get the same effects as using a light machine in a fraction of the time. This device was developed in Finland, where people have serious problems with lack of sunlight.
Our Electronics are Destroying Our Sleep
Artificial light of all kinds is disruptive to sleep, but by far the biggest offender is the blue light emitted from computers, smartphones, TVs, and iPads.
Here’s how the ways electronic gadgets we love are ruining our sleep:
- First they give off light that’s very similar to sunlight. This sends a signal to your brain that it’s daytime — even at night. This shuts down melatonin production.
- This melatonin suppression conversely increases the production of the stress hormone cortisol and the hunger hormone gherlin, leading to nocturnal raids on the fridge.
- Electronics in the bedroom deal your brain a double whammy. Besides giving off blue light, their electromagnetic fields disrupt production of, once again, melatonin.
Surprisingly, small handheld devices are worse for sleep than watching a big screen TV since they emit more blue light and are held closer to your eyes.
Keep electronics out of the bedroom as much as possible and definitely turn them off at night.
Innovative Solutions
Here some innovative solutions that let’s you enjoy your electronics in the evening without sacrificing sleep.
[+] If you use your computer in the evening, download the free program f.lux. It adjusts the brightness and color temperature of your computer’s display according to the time of day, making it dimmer and warmer at night to minimize sleep disruption.
[+] For tablets or smartphones, you can buy a blue light filter to minimize exposure. If you have a lot of electronics this can get very expensive. And it still won’t counteract all the other artificial lights in your house — including light bulbs and television.
[+] A ridiculously low-tech solution to this high-tech problem is to grab a pair of Uvex Skyper orange tint glasses. They’ve been proven to improve sleep and mood. Not only will they block the blue light coming from all your electronics, they’ll make you look uber-cool, like Bono.
At around $10 on Amazon, this is an easy and inexpensive solution to the big blue light problem.

The Dark Side of Artificial Lights: How Artificial Lighting Effects Our Health
How has your sleep been recently? Is it hard for you to fall asleep in the evening before midnight? Can you open your eyes in the morning without the required cup of coffee; are you often excited and nervous? Especially in winter, one of the factors that affects us most is the lack of enough daylight.
A few years ago, the influence of artificial illumination seemed not to be so strong. However, through the growing use of economical light bulbs and the appearance of laptops, tablets or smart phones at every home and pocket things are getting complicated.
Think – every minute of the day we are exposed to an artificial light source. All of us know we feel better out of the urbanized environment polluted by radiation.
Main artificial light sources:
Screen radiation: television sets, monitors, tablets, smart phones.
Artificial lighting: offices, shops, commercial centers, advertising signs.
Domestic lamps with energy-sufficient (economical) light bulbs.
Unfortunately, because of the urban way of living we have chosen and our constant commitment and desire of being informed 24/7, the crushing harmful effect on our bodies caused by noise, light and electric field cannot be avoided for long time.
A separated problem is the excessive illumination of different plant such as commercial centers and offices where the intensity of the super strong lighting oppresses unnecessarily human brain and psyche.
Potential dangers coming from the use of fluorescent lamps:
The so called “economical” light bulbs have appeared relatively recently and due to some controversial decisions of the European Union they have managed to take the place of the incandescent light bulbs and now they are widely spread. In fact, several years after the quit of the mass production of the old type of bulbs the effect of the new and energy-sufficient light bulbs (everlasting in theory) was started to be explored.
Soon after it was understood that their aggrandizement is a mistake since the cold artificial light generated by the fluorescent lamps has numerous disadvantages, including the likelihood for this kind of lighting to increase anxiety and depression. To a significant extent it is due to the rather limited spectrum of the light radiated by them.

Fluorescent light bulbs emit radiation, although its levels are low. An additional “extra” is the visual impairment in the time spent in such kind of lighting as it is emitted by fits and starts, through vibration similar to that of the old CRT-monitors. Human eyes are easy to be deceived that light is steady, but brains feel the vibration subconsciously and it damages normal visual and perceptive processes.
The light of the incandescent light bulbs has similar effects. Nevertheless, it is still everywhere – a fact which is mostly due to its low cost.
The imperfect spectrum is not only an enemy of human vision. The harmful spectrum also oppresses our brains and makes us inadequate. And the vibrations of the artificial illumination affect our nervous systems, psyche, adequate thinking.
Unlike fluorescent lamps, halogen lamps and incandescent light bulbs do not need waiting to reach their complete lighting capacity. Furthermore, they are not as dependent on the frequency of switching on and off as the modern bulbs.
As far as environment is concerned, modern lamps are not very useful as in Bulgaria there is no electronic waste recycling plant, and in this type of modern light bulbs there are a lot of electronic components.
Besides, they contain a significant amount of mercury which makes them potentially dangerous in case of breaking.
How can we reduce the harmful impact of artificial illumination?
At least at home try to replace all CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) with halogen ones whose influence is significantly more acceptable and the light they emit is warm and in a colour spectrum very similar to that of the sunlight.
Look for the natural light. Spend as much time as it is possible outdoors in order to ensure your body the opportunity to synthesize the extremely useful vitamin D. There is nothing more useful for your good health than the natural sunlight. That is why you have to be exposed to it more often.
Each occasion to spend time outdoors is good. Switch off the lamps during the day and try to restrict the time spent in watching your monitors, computers and phone screens. If you can afford replacing your laptop and the monitor of your computer with higher quality ones (which are often more expensive), then do it.
Try to get up earlier in the morning and go to bed earlier in the evening, preferably every day at the same time. Never keep a computer, laptop or TV set in the room where you will sleep.
Artificial illumination, especially when it is of low quality, leads to depression, a weakened immune system and other health problems. Social isolation, alcoholism, depression and readiness to suicide are coincidentally spread among northern nations as the sunlight in the northern parts of the globe is not enough.
The problem is not that they do not have money for lighting; on the contrary, they are the richest economically and technologically developed states. What is paradoxical for most people is that the happiest peoples live in economically poor but rich in sun countries. We absorb the light around us, we soak it in and it feeds our energy. The more time we spend in real light, the happier we will be; try it yourself and see!
