– For the last 21 years, there has been a self-sustaining community living fossil free in rural Somerset, England. They call themselves the Bubbleites of Tinker’s Bubble. Here’s their story:
Tinker’s Bubble is located in a beautiful 40 acre hillside woodland park area. While they don’t make much money, they are rich in happiness and fulfilled with living a lifestyle that coincides with their beliefs. These beliefs are rooted in education, sharing and contributing as a community, and living in harmonious ways with nature.
The Bubbleites use alternative eco-friendly energy practices such as cooking on wood stoves or open fires, using wind & solar energy for electricity, and using a huge steam powered locomotive engine (which by the way is located inside a barn to reduce sound pollution!). Another inspirational quality of the Bubbleites is their self-sustaining practices. They build their own homes and grow their own organic foods. With their left over foods, they sell them to organic distributers and at local farmer markets.
Each Bubbleite finds a unique way to make a living; some work for local nonprofits while others are gardeners and craftsmen. While some may call these people extremist or nuts, I have a great level of respect for their lifestyle. If all of humanity switched to their way of living as the norm, we could evolve at much greater rates and live peacefully among each other and Mother Earth. The Bubbleites of Tinker’s Bubble truly live out the powerful Gandhi saying of “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
