– US President Barack Obama is fighting hard against the military-industrial complex which is influencing American foreign policy, a political commentator and peace activist says.
Alice Slater, who is NY Director of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Tuesday while commenting on an unnamed Obama administration official’s warning that new sanctions against Iran during nuclear negotiations would threaten the diplomatic process.
“It is a very difficult situation in the United States right now because the canvas is very dominated by the military-industrial complex,” Slater said. “When President [Dwight D.] Eisenhower left office – he was the general that won World War II and then he became president – he warned America about the military industrial complex; that it is influencing policy and corrupting our democracy.”
“And what you have now is a Congress that is totally corrupted by money from large military contractors that’s voting for war over and over again. And if it’s not Iran, it will some be place else. They pick enemies and they spell out trouble,” she added.
“I think Obama wanted to do the right thing with Iran. I mean he REALLY fought it back. He had to fight back the drive for sanctions during the negotiations,” Slater stated.
The Obama administration has insisted that more sanctions could derail the possibility of a nuclear agreement with Iran. However, with control of Republicans over both chambers of Congress this week, they will put pressure on other lawmakers to vote on Iran sanctions legislation.
In November, Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — China, Russia, Britain, France, and the United States — plus Germany agreed to extend the nuclear talks.
They also agreed that the interim deal they had signed in Geneva in November 2013 remain in place during the negotiations process until July 1, 2015
