Uganda said Wednesday that a new cult-like rebel army has been formed with financial support from Western “individuals,” according to dpa reports. The funding for the newly organized rebel group comes from the US, UK, Canada and Australia, the Uganda police spokesman claims.

Six people including a senior army official have been arrested in connection with the group, security officials said. They were to appear in court Thursday on treason charges.

According to police spokesman Fred Enanga, the new group God’s Resistance Army (GRA) is similar to the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which devastated northern Uganda for decades and displaced up to two million people. It said it wanted to install a government based on the teachings of the Bible.

“God’s Resistance Army started recruiting in West Nile at the end of last year and now they have expanded to other areas in the northern region,” Enanga said.

The LRA was routed from the north and its remnants fled to the Central African Republic and to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Some of the GRA recruits are former LRA fighters, while others are army deserters, Enanga said.

“They have been getting funds from the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia. We are investigating their funders. They have been getting money and clothes,” the spokesman said.

The government of President Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, has previously warned of the existence of rebel groups that in the end never staged any attacks. Critics say the groups were a pretext to arrest Museveni’s political opponents and charge them with treason.
